Unknown Welsh Lady (Limited Print)
The name of this woman may be lost to time, but her presence lingers. Unlike many formal portraits of the era, the Unknown Welsh Lady is not looking at the camera — instead, her gaze drifts to the side, as if distracted by something just out of view.
This small detail gives her an air of vulnerability or perhaps uncertainty, like she’s unsure how to hold herself in the moment. There’s a rawness here, a glimpse of something unstaged.
Wearing traditional Welsh dress with fringed shawl and tall hat (Y Het Gymreim - meaning 'the Welsh hat'), she stands as part of a vanishing world — yet feels very human and present.
Reimagined in finely detailed pen-and-ink style, this larger format print brings even greater impact. At A2 size (42 cm by 59.4 cm), it makes a striking statement on the wall and allows the intricacy of the linework to shine. While it will fit a standard A2 frame, I recommend using a slightly larger frame with a mount to give the piece room to breathe and add a sense of formality.
This is part of the Welsh Ladies & Gentlemen Collection, celebrating six historical figures from Wales. Each one was carefully selected from the archives of the National Library of Wales and drawn with their permission.
This limited edition of 100 prints of my original illustration.
