Where the Toadstool Grows

Where the Toadstool Grows

Deep in the woodland shade, half hidden by ferns and fallen leaves, a fly agaric rises, unmistakable in its scarlet cap and scattering of white flecks. This is the second piece in my mushroom study series, and easily one of the most magical characters of the forest floor.

Illustrated with dip pen and ink in a rich, warm brown I've been drawn to more and more this year, the piece is built up in layers of watercolour wash, kept slightly more restrained than my usual loose, intentional bleeds, so the whole scene feels closer to a Victorian field study or an illustration tucked inside an old fairytale book. A final layer of coloured pencil adds the swirling lines and extra definition that bring the piece its movement and depth.

Fly agarics are some of the most recognisable fungi in British woodland, often found nestled beneath birch and pine from late summer through autumn. Spotting one always feels a little like stumbling into a storybook.
